All fencers selected must make themselves available for the teams event.

Fencers must be self funding and self managing. In the event that the referee requirement is triggered, fencers will be responsible for meeting those additional costs.

2013-10-23 22:01 - Top fencers to participate in World Combat Games
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (International)
InternationalLausanne, 21 October 2013 – The crème de la crème of fencing will participate in the 2013 World Combat Games in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Five out of the six top ranked fencers in the 2012/2013 season will compete from 24 – 26 October in the St. Petersburg Sports Complex: Arianna Errigo (ITA, women’s foil), Andrea Cassara (ITA, men’s foil), Ana Maria Branza (ROU, women’s epee), Rubén Limardo Gascón (VEN, men’s epee) and Veniamin Reshetnikov (RUS, men’s sabre).

They will be joined by reigning world champions Miles Chamley-Watson (USA, men’s foil), Nikolai Novosjolov (EST, men’s epee) and Julia Beljajeva (EST, women’s epee).

Errigo and Reshetnikov stick out in particular among these top athletes as they both became double world champions at the 2013 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. In St. Petersburg, they will compete on 24 October with the gold medal matches starting at 18:00 local time. Men’s epee and women’s sabre is scheduled for 25 October. The fencing competitions close with women’s epee and men’s foil on 26 October.

Arianna Errigo said about the World Combat Games: “I am going to the World Combat Games with the feeling that it will be a special competition for me. It  is the first time that I will go on the piste as a World Champion, but this will undoubtedly give me a lot of strenght. Furthermore, this event is taking place  in a moment when the  new season is beginning. Personally, I don’t feel at my best, because I am working to be ready in January. But when I compete I do want to win and in Saint Petersburg I will do anything to reach the best result.”

FIE Secretary General Frederic Pietruszka said: “The FIE is satisfied to have an additional competition that provides a high level platform for our stars. We are constantly looking at how we can reach out to new audiences. This is also why we launch a new Grand Prix series in the 2014/2015 season with nine top events in nine iconic places around the world.”

Fans and media can watch the World Combat Games live on http://www.youtube.com/user/combatgamechannel/feed and follow the live results on www.worldcombatgames.com.

2013-05-04 18:26 - Asian U23 Nominations - Update
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (International)
InternationalThe Asian U23 competition has been confirmed for Kuwait 20 - 25 September 2013.

Nominations close for this event on 10 May 2013 with  secretary@fencing.org.nz

The U23 category is being introduced as a stepping-stone for younger fencers as they make their way into the Senior circuit. The first Asian U23 was held in 2012, and has been widely adopted in other zones around the world.

As yet the U23 age group has yet to attain full FIE status, but the popularity of the age class would suggest that it may not be long before it is adopted.

Fencers nominating for this event need to be aware that there is no funding available through FIE or FeNZ and that fencers will need to be self managing as no team management will be appointed. Fencers will need to meet the minimum qualifying standard for this event, as set out on the FeNZ High Performance Plan, and will be subject to selection by the FeNZ selectors.

2013-04-12 19:25 - Junior World Champs - Wai Ling Chan
Posted by Lambviccmore from same (International)
InternationalAn update on our NZ fencer Wai Ling Chan at the Junior World Champs.

Wai Ling started well. In the 1st bout she was leading 4-2 against the 4th seed French girl. However, her youth and lack of experience was a disadvantage and she lost 4-5.

Being a little unsettled after the first bout, in the 2nd bout Wai Ling lost 0-5 to a fencer from Israel. After reviewing her tactics and picking up the pace back on the piste she won all  3 of her following bouts. Coming out of the pools, Wai Ling was ranked 47 out of 120.

In the Tableau of 128, Wai Ling was up against the more experienced 82nd ranked Japanese fencer and in a close fought match lost 14-15.  Wai Ling's final ranking was 67th out of 119.

This result followed a nervous start in the Cadet event, when Wai Ling made the cut but succumbed to the pressure of the event and lost her first DE bout.

Congratulations to Wai Ling Chan for her results at her first World Champs. We look forward to her continuing to develop and achieve.
