Challenge Australia 2003 World Cup Epee is to be held 18 - 20 July in Sydney. The AFF have confirmed that normal entry restrictions for world cup competitions will not apply to New Zealanders for this event. This means that NZ can enter more than 5 fencers in the event provided we supply the requisite number of qualified referees. The FeNZ executive have asked me, as Selector, to implement a selection policy/performance benchmark for fencers interested in competing in Sydney and it is as follows:
To be eligible for consideration to compete in the individual event at Challenge Australia a fencer should have placed in the final 8 at either the preceding National Championship or North Island Championship Epee event, except where 8 is more than half the number in the field in which case they should be placed in the top 4. Any application for a waiver from this requirement will be granted at the sole discretion of the Selector(s) and should be based on comparable performance eg for overseas based fencers. The Selector(s) reserves the right to tighten or relax these requirements in any given year depending on constraints such as the availability of referees. Fencers competing must agree to contribute to the cost of management and/or referees if required to do so. Expressions of interest should be received by the Selector(s) no later than 3 June 2003 and can be forwarded to Selector@fencing.org.nz.
