The FIE have temporarily suspended the new foil requirement to wear transparent masks while an investigation is completed of an incident where a Venezuelan fencer wearing a transparent visor was injured during epee training.
In the light of this occurrence, as President of Fencing New Zealand, I recommend to our members to take notice of this and to also suspend using the transparent mask until the results of the FIE investigations are known.
Also note that the FIE consider epee actions are "becoming more and more violent, and therefore more dangerous, and that some of the blades used were extremely rigid."
Our fencers should note that for FIE events "it is therefore expressly asked that the referees seriously sanction any violence and offence against good sportsmanship" and "the organisers of the competitions check the flexibility of the épée blades".
