The fencing events have four gold medals at stake - in Individual and then Teams for Men's and Women's Epee. The increase in team size from 3 to 4 provides an overall total field of 56 fencers competing. For each event there will now be 28 fencers lining up in 7 teams; Australia (2 teams), Great Britain, India, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore.
We wish our team well - Kia kaha - Stand Tall / Be Strong.
The team came together last week in Christchurch for the final training at The Fencing Institute with Kate Brill, assisted by Martin Brill. Fitness testing showed an improvement in fitness since the beginning of the AYOF preparation training program. Over the whole group fitness levels increased. The Team members are all now in the range above average to excellent.
Training finished this afternoon (Sunday) with fencers now packing and preparing for their 7am Tuesday morning departure from Christchurch Airport for Sydney. They will be traveling with other NZ sports teams AYOF bound.
Congratulations to our 8 fencers who will help make up the 180 strong New Zealand AYOF Team. We wish them all well - Kia kaha, Stand Tall / Be Strong.
