The FIE have announced that they hope to resume some competitions in February 2021, particularly the competitions counting for Olympic qualification. Federations so far have not been able to confirm their ability to hold competitions or have already cancelled them because of the stringent restrictions imposed due to COVID19. The FIE have therefore not been able to confirm the Calendar for 2021 at this stage.
The FIE will only resume competitions when conditions for health, participation and flights permit. They are conscious that no-one should be penalised or left behind and wish to ensure protective protocols for the benefit of everyone.
Fencing NZ will open nominations for overseas events when calendar dates and events are confirmed. The Selection Criteria for international events allow Selectors to take into account the lack of qualifying competitions. The Australian Fencing Federation has announced that it will resume national competitions in May 2021. Fencers wishing to be selected for 2022 events will be expected to have attended some of these competitions if travel restrictions are lifted and it is possible to travel freely without quarantine between New Zealand and Australia.
