Fencing New Zealand is the national governing body for the sport of fencing in New Zealand. As an Incorporated Society registered for GST, we serve a membership of approximately 500 people with an annual turnover of around $200,000. Our funding primarily comes from membership affiliations, national events, donations, and grants.

The Opportunity

Fencing New Zealand is seeking expressions of interest for the volunteer position of Treasurer, who will also serve as a voting member of the Board of Directors. This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified individual to contribute their financial expertise and gain valuable experience in the operations, governance, and strategic direction oAf a national sporting organization.

Role Overview

As Treasurer and Board Member, you will be:

  1. Financial Controller and Accountant
  2. Active Board Member and organisational leader
  3. A champion of continuous improvement in Fencing NZ's processes and systems

Key Responsibilities

This role requires approximately 4-8 hours per week, divided into:

Annual (5 days per year)

  • Prepare AGM accounts and performance report
  • Handle Incorporated Societies filing
  • Manage annual membership affiliation process
  • Oversee Liability and Equipment Insurances
  • Lead budgeting process

Monthly (4-8 hours per month)

  • Run accounts payable and expense claims
  • Manage accounts receivable and debtors
  • File GST return (bi-monthly)

Periodic (2-8 hours per month)

  • Prepare grant applications and acquittal reporting
  • Produce financial accounts and reports for Board meetings
  • Answer financial queries
  • Clarify and update processes and procedures
  • Monitor core systems (Xero, Sporty, Receipt-Stash, Debit Success)

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Finance, accounting, or business experience
  • Familiarity with accounting software for accounts payable, invoicing, financial reporting, and GST
  • Prior board or governance experience (desirable)

Support and Working Relationships

The incoming Treasurer will be supported by the outgoing Treasurer and Fencing NZ's accountants for annual reporting. Key working relationships include the President, Secretary General, National Administrator, and donors/grant providers.

Term of Office

The position is currently open, with a term of three years.
